Artwork

What age do the children need to be to participate in an art project?

Children of all ages enjoy participating in the Little Paintbox art projects. When very young children are involved, then it may be worth considering projects based on taking prints of the children’s hands or feet, for example, or using stencils or potato prints. Free painting can also produce interesting shapes and colours.

What type of materials work well?

To get the best results you can use crayons, felt tips, pastels, poster paints, acrylics, wax crayons or watercolours as well as collages with coloured paper/tissue paper/felt, or hand/foot prints, sponge/potato prints and rubber stamps. We don’t recommend using pencil or glitter.

What type of paper should we use for the artwork?

It is possible to use any type of paper for the artwork, although the paper needs to be of a good quality thickness if using poster paints, to avoid warping of the paper. Plain white paper works very well, but coloured paper can be used if preferred. An example would be a white snowmen stuck on red/black card. If using coloured paper, please ensure there is plenty of background for bleed. For further information please see creating your artwork.

What type of themes and topics work well for the artwork?

The project themes can be based around any topic of your choosing. Topics that generally work well include: the child and their home life (including self-portraits); the home; family and pets. Seasonal and festive topics also work well, for example, the different seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) or festivities (Easter, Halloween, Christmas, New Year).
